Diet and Nutrition

Diet and Nutrition is basically the sum of all food consumed by a person. The word “diet” often relates to a more specific intake of foods that are ideal for maintaining a healthy body weight.

Sports nutrition is a more specific area in that it refers to the consumption of foods needed to improve athletic performance. Nutrition is an important part of many sports training regimens, being popular in strength sports (such as weightlifting and bodybuilding) and endurance sports (e.g. cycling, running, swimming).

Sports Nutrition also focuses its studies on hydration and the quantity of fluids and food taken by an athlete. In addition, it deals with the consumption of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, supplements and organic substances that include carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

Proper nutrition requires ingestion and absorption of vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids from protein and essential fatty acids from fat-containing food, also food energy in the form of carbohydrate, protein, and fat.

Dietary habits and choices play a significant role in the quality of life, health and longevity. Nutrition deficiency can put the body at risk of disease, while an improper diet (ex. excessive sodium or sugar) can trigger high blood pressure or diabetes.
